Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils derived from plants for healing purposes. Essential oils are a concentrated extract taken from the root, leaf or blossom of a plant. Each oil contains its own mixture of active ingredients and this combination determines its healing properties.
The word aroma in Aromatherapy is misleading because essential oils are not solely used as inhalants or to scent a room. Essential oils can also be massaged into the skin or taken orally; although less common and only administered by a professional. Whether inhaled, absorbed or ingested, essential oils have been proven to be an effective treatment for states of dis-ease that can effect the whole person.
Essential oils promote physical health and can be used to treat burns and scars, to relieve swelling and fight fungal or bacterial infections and ease conditions such as insomnia, irregular heartbeat and high blood pressure. Essential oils promote emotional health also, as they can be used to treat depression, anger, frustration, etc. and encourage relaxation.
One way that essential oils work is through our sense of smell when we inhale their vapor. Our sense of smell is incredibly powerful; according to some estimates about 10,000 times stronger than any other sense. The smell receptors in your nose communicate with two structures embedded deep in the limbic area of the brain, the amygdala and the hippocampus. These structures serve as a storehouse of emotions and memories. When essential oil molecules are inhaled they affect these parts of the brain directly, therefore researchers believe that stimulation of these structures affects our physical, emotional and mental health.
Breathing in essential oils can benefit the respiratory system also. For example, certain oils derived from the Eucalyptus plant are able to clear sinuses and prevent respiratory infections
Aromatherapy massage is another popular method of using essential oils. It works in a complete way by encompassing the benefits of inhaling the oil’s vapors to stimulate the brain and respiratory system while the oil is absorbed into the blood stream through the skinÉand lets us not forget the tactile benefits of massage in the healing process. Studies have shown that people massaged with Aromatherapy oils experience pleasurable feelings, lowered levels of anxiety and heightened states of relaxation.
The cost of essential oils varies. Plants such as Lavender, Lemon and Eucalyptus yield much more essential oil and retail at lower prices. Lavender oil, purchased generally for about $30 per ounce, while other oils such as pure Rose oil retail at $133 per ounce. The difference in cost is caused by the fact that 110 pounds of rose petals are needed to produce one single ounce of the essential oil. Not as many petals needed, to produce the same ounce of Lavender oil. It is important to note however that the costly oils are highly concentrated, so you need fewer drops of oil to be just as effective. The costs even out because you can purchase smaller amounts of these precious oils and get the same healing benefits.
The essential oils sold in stores are often mislabeled, therefore you can’t be sure that the amount of oil contained in the bottle (or dose, as in capsule form) is the same as what the label states. As a qualified Aromatherapist, I can help you decide which essential oils will be most effective and recommend the proper blends to suit your needs.
The amount of oil absorbed into the skin is generally low when applied as directed, supporting the use of essential oils as a safe healing method. Some stronger oils, i.e., Eucalyptus and Peppermint can burn the skin if applied "neat"; directly and undiluted therefore most essential oils, should be, diluted with water or added to a base massage oil such as almond or sesame. Test on a small patch of skin overnight for sensitivity.
